Check Your Fluids On a Regular Basis
All fluids should be checked regularly and topped off if needed. A continual loss of oil, power steering, antifreeze and transmission fluid may be an indication of a serious leak and should be checked out by your mechanic. Brake fluid level will decrease slightly as the brakes wear. Make sure you use the proper fluid specification when topping off any fluid, which can be found in your glove box owner’s manual.
Some fluid levels, such as differential or manual transmission can only be checked from under the vehicle, you may need to bring your car to your mechanic for these fluid checks. Never check radiator antifreeze when the engine is hot, only when cold. Batteries, for the most part are sealed and maintenance free, so no need to check battery fluid. Generally, check under hood fluids: engine oil level, transmission (if possible), power steering, windshield washer, antifreeze and brake fluid. Always wear the proper gloves when checking fluids.
