Getting stuck on the side of the road is never fun. Getting stuck in sub-freezing temperatures during the winter can be life threatening. Old man winter is gearing up to make his return; bringing severe cold, snow, and ice. These conditions can make it harder for drivers to see, slow down, and stop – all factors that can increase the chances of an accident. Moreover, during the cold months, if you don’t properly winterize your car, it’s not going to function at its best potential.
Here are some tips on how to get your car ready for this winter.
-
Maintenance – ensure your car is up to date with all recommended services, like an oil change and fluid service, and that your vehicle’s belts and hoses can withstand the extreme conditions ahead.
-
Heat – You’re going to want a nice warm car on those cold winter days so make sure your car’s heater and defroster are working properly.
-
Tires – If you are confident that your vehicle will not be driven in snow or bad weather, and your tires are in good shape, then you will not need snow tires. However, if you need to drive in all types of weather, I would consider snow tires or a quality set of all-season tires. Please make sure your tires are up to par with tread depth and the correct inflation pressure.
-
Antifreeze – Make sure the engine has the proper antifreeze protection, if not; the engine may freeze in frigid temperatures. If Osceola Garage is your car care center, we’ll top off your fluids when we change your oil.
-
Brakes – Now is not the time to stretch those worn brake pads. Winter poses enough challenges, and by the time you hear squeaking, the brake pads are below safety standards.
-
Battery – Have your battery tested and charged, or replaced. It’s not the mileage that matters, but the age. An old battery (3 years or older) can fail without warning and may leave you stranded out in the cold.
-
Wipers – Check your wiper blades and consider winter wiper blades specially formulated to handle snow and ice.
-
Extras – Always carry an extra bottle of wiper fluid in the trunk, with snow/sleet/road salt you’ll use more than normal. Now is also a good time to double check your roadside emergency kit and confirm you have enough supplies for your family; as well as your ice scraper, a snow shovel, and sand or salt. It’s better to be prepared just in case.
