Today may be winter’s last show as we look ahead to next week and see temperatures mimicking late spring temps. Allergy sufferers are prepared as pollen producing plants gear up for an early start. We are not doctors, and we don’t have any cures for allergies, but we can tell you that your car could make your allergies worse.
Fall leaves and bugs can settle into your intake and cabin air filters, the over the winter become compacted with road contaminants. By the spring season, the layer of debris on your air filters has become so concentrated; they’re not doing their job of filtering the air entering the passenger cabin.
Think about your home’s heating and cooling system filters, or your vacuum cleaner’s filter. These are items that stay in your home, only filtering dusting and air particles in and around your home, but after 3 months or so they need a good cleaning or replacing. Now think about the roads you drive on every day and how much more pollutants your car is exposed to. Your car’s cabin filter l has a much harder job.
Why should you change your car’s cabin filters at least once a year:
- Clogged cabin filter will reduce the efficiency and flow of your air conditioner system
- The filter removes road dust, soot, gaseous odors, pollutants and other contaminants from entering the ventilation system
- Micro-organisms can accumulate inside the car cabin, potentially multiplying to concentrations of between 5 to 8 times higher than normal.
When temperatures peak into the warm and sunny 60’s next week, and you find yourself looking at your spring cleaning checklist, don’t forget to add your car’s air filters. Historically speaking, a rapid warm up, leave allergy suffers in a bind so stock up on tissues and antihistamines. Hopefully, you’ve had your cabin air filters changed, so they can do their job efficiently and minimize the effects of the allergens trying to make their way into your car.
If you are unsure or don’t know how to check your car’s filters, bring your car in for an oil change or take advantage of our Pothole Recovery Service and we can check your filters for you. With every cabin filter replacement, we will clean all debris from your vents, and disinfect your heater and air conditioner vents, leaving your car germ free and smelling like spring time!
