October is National Car Care Month, and for a good reason. The fall is the best time of the year to get your car ready for the harsh days of winter. Taking a little time for auto care now can help you avoid the headaches of a costly emergency breakdown later. Below are some of the more common auto maintenance services.
Wiper Blades
You generally use your wipers more frequently in the fall and winter. They’ll also be taking a lot more abuse from road grime and windshield-washer solvent, so it’s best to have a fresh set installed in the fall.
Tires
Fall is also a good time to check your tires, and your spare tire too, to ensure that it is properly inflated and in good condition. Tire pressure drops in colder temperatures, so check your tire pressure once a month. The proper inflation pressure will be listed in your vehicle’s owner manual and noted on a sticker located on the driver’s doorjamb.
Washer fluid, antifreeze, and other under hood fluids
In Fall, all under hood fluids should be checked and topped off. Windshield-washer fluid needs to be refilled with a cold-weather solution for the upcoming freezing temperatures. It’s also a good time to check your antifreeze reservoir. Make sure that you are using the correct fluid for your vehicle. Your antifreeze should be replaced at least every five years, no matter the mileage.
Air Filter
Engine air filters should be inspected twice per year as part of car maintenance and replaced about every other year. So, if you haven’t done so already, replacing your car’s air filter is a good idea. When an air filter reaches the point where it restricts airflow, the car’s fuel economy, performance, and emissions begin to deteriorate, getting progressively worse until the dirty filter is replace
Battery terminals and connections
Many electrical issues and ignition problems stem from loose or corroded battery connections. If you notice corrosion on the posts or cable connectors, please bring it your auto service professional. Battery corrosion and acid must be handled properly by a trained pro. If your battery is more than 4 years old, it should be tested; batteries usually last 4 to 5 years.
Exterior Lights
As part of regular car maintenance, and for safety, make sure all of the car’s lights are working. Remember, the days are getting shorter. Your service pro can help you with exterior bulb replacement.
