Spring is in full bloom, and so is the pollen, dust, and pollutants that are drawn inside your vehicle through its air conditioning and ventilation systems. Cabin air filters, located inside the dashboard of your car, clean the incoming air and should regularly be replaced about once a year. A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can cause contaminants to become so concentrated in your passenger compartment, that passengers breathe in more fumes and particles inside the car than when walking down the street.
Why should you change your car’s cabin filters at least once a year:
A clogged cabin filter will reduce the efficiency and flow of your air conditioner system. Additionally, this will cause the vents to blow with noticeably less force, reducing the overall cooling capacity of the AC system, and will also place an additional strain on the AC blower motor.
Poor Air Quality
The filter removes road dust, soot, gaseous odors, pollutants and other contaminants from entering the ventilation system. Micro-organisms can accumulate inside the car cabin, potentially multiplying to concentrations of between 5 to 8 times higher than normal. An excessively contaminated filter may produce a dusty, dirty, or musty smell. The smell may become more pronounced when the air is turned on and may make the cabin uncomfortable for the passenger and pose a health risk.
Think about your home’s heating and cooling system filters, or your vacuum cleaner’s filter. After three months or so they need a good cleaning or replacing. Now think about the roads you drive on every day and how much more pollutants your car is exposed to. Your car’s cabin filter has a much harder job. If your cabin filter is more than a year old, it should be inspected and replaced if needed.
A cabin filter is a simple component that should be replaced when necessary to keep the AC system working as efficiently as possible and to keep the cabin as comfortable as possible for the passengers. We recommend you clean it every 12,000 to 15,000 miles.
Hopefully, you’ve had your cabin air filters changed so they can do their job efficiently and minimize the effects of the allergens trying to make their way into your car. If not, give us a call, and we’ll be glad to get your vehicle ready for spring.
