Staying Safe Behind the Wheel of Your Car

February 20, 2013 by Joe Marconi Leave a Comment

A Guide for Parents-Teenagers and Drivers of All Ages

We are doing a sixteen part step-by-step guide for all drivers, every level driver will and can benefit from the information in our “Staying Safe Behind The Wheel” guide.

The information in this guide will consist of valuable safety tips, how to handle emergencies, saving money on auto repairs, extending the life of your vehicle thru proper maintenance.  It incorporates a balance between following the rules of the road and having a well maintained, safe vehicle.  This guide will also help you keep safe behind the wheel, lower stress and enjoy years of fun-filled driving.

This is a must read for everyone.  We hope that you’ll continue to read our step-by-step guide and we welcome any feedback

Part 1 – Automotive basics

Knowing the basics of your car and understanding the importance of proper vehicle maintenance will decrease your chances of a costly breakdown and will help you during an emergency situation.

For example: Worn tires can greatly affect steering, especially in bad weather, and increase your chances of losing control. Always make sure you vehicle is up to date with all its required services.

The oil change service is the most important service and for most cars should be performed every 4-5,000 miles for conventional oil; for synthetic oil, every 7,500 miles.  During an oil change service all fluids are checked. In addition, all vital vehicle components are inspected: Brakes, steering, suspension, belts, hoses, lights, battery, filters, tires, tire pressure and other important systems. Preventive maintenance is the only sure way to decrease your odds of a breakdown and will lower the total cost of owning your automobile.

All new drivers should familiarize themselves with all the functions of the vehicle they will be using on a regular basis. For example, if your car has antilock brakes, you need to know how the antilock brake system operates during a panic situation. Understanding this will better prepare you in a brake panic situation or stopping the vehicle on wet, slippery surfaces.  The glove box owner’s manual is a great resource for valuable vehicle information.
