The NBA Playoffs are Here: A Preview of the Exciting Matchups

The 2017-18 NBA season recently came to an end, and now it’s time for the playoffs to begin. Just like the thrilling NCAA tournament, the NBA playoffs promise to be another exhilarating bracket of basketball. While there are some familiar faces in the mix, there are also a few notable newcomers to keep an eye on. Let’s take a look at how the regular season unfolded.

The Dramatic Finish

Many of the playoff seedings were undecided until the last night of the regular season. Both the Eastern and Western Conferences had several closely-ranked teams. However, one game stood out as the most nail-biting and dramatic of them all.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets found themselves with identical records. They were the 8th and 9th seeds, respectively, with only the top eight teams making it to the playoffs. In a do-or-die game, the Timberwolves managed to secure the 8th seed in the very last second, with the game going into overtime.

It was an incredible game that gave us a taste of the excitement that awaits us in the playoffs.

First Round Matchups

On both sides of the bracket, there are intriguing matchups and plenty of potential for upsets. The Golden State Warriors, the reigning champions, are not the favorites to defend their title this year. They have struggled in the latter part of the regular season, losing 10 out of their last 17 games. Additionally, they are still without their star player, Steph Curry.

  • Houston Rockets (1) vs. Minnesota Timberwolves (8): The Rockets, the top team in the NBA this season, will face the Timberwolves, who secured their place in the playoffs in dramatic fashion.

  • Oklahoma City Thunder (4) vs. Utah Jazz (5): Despite the Thunder’s Russell Westbrook achieving a rare triple-double average for the second time, the Jazz are a formidable opponent.

  • Portland Trail Blazers (3) vs. New Orleans Pelicans (6): The Trail Blazers have been on fire recently, but the Pelicans, led by Anthony Davis, will be a tough challenge.

  • Golden State Warriors (2) vs. San Antonio Spurs (7): The Spurs’ prolonged playoff streak continues, but they face a tough battle against the Warriors, who are missing Curry but still have a star-studded lineup.

In the Eastern Conference, we have the following matchups:

  • Toronto Raptors (1) vs. Washington Wizards (8): With John Wall back from injury, the Wizards are a dangerous 8th seed. The Raptors, having their best season in years, will look to avoid disappointment and make a deep playoff run.

  • Cleveland Cavaliers (4) vs. Indiana Pacers (5): The Pacers have exceeded expectations this season, but they will have their work cut out for them against perennial Finals contender LeBron James and the Cavaliers.

  • Philadelphia 76ers (3) vs. Miami Heat (6): The young and talented 76ers are having their best season in years, and they will be eager to make a statement in the playoffs. However, an injured Joel Embiid could pose challenges against the Heat’s Hassan Whiteside.

  • Boston Celtics (2) vs. Milwaukee Bucks (7): Despite injuries to key players like Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving, the Celtics have fought hard all season. Don’t underestimate their resilience as they face off against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks.
