Celtics: What’s New, Season Prediction & 2024 Free Agents

The Boston Celtics are heading into the new season with their star forwards, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, leading the way. Brown recently signed the richest NBA contract ever, ensuring that the Celtics will have him for a long time. However, the supporting cast around Brown and Tatum has undergone significant changes in the past three months.

Out are Malcolm Brogdon, Marcus Smart, Grant Williams, and Robert Williams III. In their place, the Celtics have acquired Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to strengthen their rotation. These moves signal the team’s commitment to improving and competing at the highest level.

What’s New?

After a trade involving Malcolm Brogdon fell through, the Celtics made a deal that sent Marcus Smart to the Dallas Mavericks, acquiring Kristaps Porzingis in return. This trade has dramatically altered the team’s rotation and added another dynamic player to their lineup.

Additionally, Grant Williams, who was in and out of the playoff rotation, left for Dallas, while Oshae Brissett joined as a possible replacement. The Celtics further bolstered their roster by trading Brogdon and Robert Williams, along with two first-round picks, to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jrue Holiday. This move was a response to the Milwaukee Bucks’ acquisition of Damian Lillard.

How Far Can the Celtics Go?

The Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics are considered co-favorites in the Eastern Conference. While the Celtics may have less depth than their counterparts, if they remain healthy and receive solid contributions from their top six players, they have the potential to surpass expectations in the playoffs. The ultimate goal for the Celtics is to win a championship, and they have the talent and determination to make it happen.

1 Player That Must Take a Leap

Oshae Brissett is a player that the Celtics are counting on to step up this season. With the team’s need for reliable depth, it is crucial for Brissett to make an impact. Payton Pritchard’s development is also essential, especially considering Al Horford’s age (37 years old) and the team’s thinner frontcourt depth. Brissett, despite having no playoff experience, is the next player in line to provide valuable minutes at the power forward position. His ability to knock down shots and hold his own defensively will be crucial to the team’s success.

In-Season Tournament

The Celtics find themselves in East Group C for the In-Season Tournament. For those unfamiliar with the tournament, here’s a quick refresher on how it works.

Upcoming Free Agents

Looking ahead to 2024, the Celtics have eight potential free agents. This includes Dalano Banton (team option), Oshae Brissett (player option), JD Davison (two-way player), Sam Hauser (team option), Luke Kornet, Svi Mykhailiuk, Neemias Queta (two-way player), and Jay Scrubb (two-way player). While the focus is currently on securing the future of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, tough decisions will have to be made in 2025 when other rotation pieces become free agents.
