Driving Tips for Ski Trips

Driving Tips for Ski Trips

Winter has finally arrived, and the ski resorts are back in business.  Head for the hills for some family fun. Whether skiing or snowboarding, New York has some prime ski resorts within a short drive. After grabbing your winter coat, checking your ski-boot straps, and waxing your skis or snowboard, run your eyes over this list of car check-ups to make sure you get to your destination safely.

Ski-Bound Car Checklist:

  • Make sure your vehicle is up to date with all recommended services

  • Check your wiper blades and consider winter wiper blades

  • Make sure all exterior lights are working

  • Strap down your skis to a roof rack or place in the car. Always check your load after you’ve hit the highway. If they’re going on the roof rack, consider a bag to protect your bindings

  • Test your car’s heater and defroster is working properly. You’re going to need the heat getting to and from the slopes.

  • Check the condition of your car’s tires and consider snow tires; they have a huge advantage over regular tires during cold winter driving

  • Make sure the engine has the proper antifreeze protection. If not, the engine may freeze in frigid temperatures

  • If your car battery is more than three years old, bring to us to have it tested.  A weak battery will fail without warning and may leave you stranded out in the cold

  • Make sure your windshield washer fluid is topped off, and always carry an extra bottle in the trunk

  • Carry a blanket in the car, along with drinking water, a flashlight, and snacks

  • Make sure you have your cell phone and a list of emergency contacts

  • Keep a small shovel and sand or kitty litter for traction if you get stuck in snow or ice

  • Slow down during a storm. Excessive speed causes more accidents than any other factor

  • Make sure friends and family know where you are going at all times during the winter months.

Where’s your favorite place to go Skiing or tubing? When driving to the mountains for winter activities, your car requires extra attention. Stay on top of your regularly scheduled maintenance, and pay attention to some items that can make the difference between a memorable vacation, and a vacation you would rather forget. I hope you’ve found these tips to be helpful. If so, please forward them to a friend or family member that might also benefit from these tips. Don’t forget to share your winter vacations pictures with us on Facebook.
