Memo from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to league employees

Adam Silver

Dear Colleagues,

The recent protests surrounding the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor have deeply impacted us all. As a league, we stand united in our outrage and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends affected by these senseless acts of violence. It is undeniable that our country continues to grapple with racism, police brutality, and racial injustice, issues that persistently plague our communities and cannot be overlooked.

I am heartened by the powerful voices within the NBA and WNBA communities – players, coaches, legends, team owners, and executives – who have spoken out against these injustices. They demand justice, advocate for peaceful protests, and actively work towards meaningful change. Together, we are committed to fostering inclusivity, bridging divides, and taking collective action to address racial inequities. By engaging in candid dialogues, supporting organizations dedicated to justice and equality, and implementing community programs and partnerships, we can make a significant difference in every NBA community.

This moment calls for introspection from all of us, including myself, who may never fully comprehend the daily pain and fear experienced by our colleagues and players. It is imperative that we reach out, actively listen to one another, and collaborate to be part of the solution. As an organization, we must use all available resources to effect meaningful change.

Even in these trying times, I have faith that we can make a difference. We owe it to our colleagues, friends, and family members who have been impacted by these acts of violence time and time again. Sports have always served as a bridge in society, fostering trust and empathy that allows us to confront difficult truths and challenges together. This responsibility is especially crucial now.

I encourage you to participate in the Dream In Color virtual community conversation, and I eagerly await your ideas and suggestions. Let us remain safe, engaged, and committed to looking out for one another.
