NBA GM Survey: 2005-06 Edition

Welcome to the NBA GM Survey, where we take a look back at the predictions and opinions of NBA General Managers since 2002. In this edition, we’ll dive into the results of the 2005-06 survey and see how things turned out.

Predictions

Let’s start with the predictions made by the GMs in the 2005-06 season.

NBA Finals Winner

The overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Finals was the San Antonio Spurs, with 76.9% of the votes. The Miami Heat came in second with 15.4% of the votes. Other teams receiving votes were the Detroit Pistons and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

MVP

In the MVP category, Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs was the top pick with 58.3% of the votes. Shaquille O’Neal of the Miami Heat came in second with 16.7% of the votes. Other players receiving votes were Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady, Jermaine O’Neal, Amar’e Stoudemire, and Dwyane Wade.

Conference Winners

The Miami Heat were the favorites to win the Eastern Conference, receiving 73.1% of the votes. The Detroit Pistons came in second with 15.4% of the votes, and the Indiana Pacers were third with 11.5% of the votes.

For the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs were the overwhelming favorites, receiving 96.2% of the votes. The Phoenix Suns came in second with 3.8% of the votes.

Division Winners

The New Jersey Nets were predicted to win the Atlantic Division with 92.3% of the votes. The Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers tied for second with 3.8% each.

In the Central Division, the Indiana Pacers were the top pick with 57.7% of the votes. The Detroit Pistons came in second with 38.5% of the votes, and the Cleveland Cavaliers were third with 3.8%.

The Miami Heat were predicted to win the Southeast Division with 100% of the votes.

The San Antonio Spurs were the unanimous choice to win the Southwest Division with 100% of the votes.

The Denver Nuggets were predicted to win the Northwest Division with 65.4% of the votes. The Minnesota Timberwolves came in second with 23.1% of the votes, and the Seattle SuperSonics were third with 11.5%.

In the Pacific Division, the Phoenix Suns were the top pick with 80.8% of the votes. The Sacramento Kings came in second with 11.5% of the votes, and the Golden State Warriors were third with 7.7%.

Most Fun Team to Watch

The Phoenix Suns were considered the most fun team to watch, receiving 59.6% of the votes. The Miami Heat came in second with 11.5% of the votes. The Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors tied for third with 7.7% each. Other teams receiving votes were the Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans/Oklahoma City, Sacramento Kings, and San Antonio Spurs.
