Salt and Sand: A lifesaver on Slippery Roads, A Killer on Cars
Salt, sand and other chemicals are used during winter months to improve traction, melt ice and keep us safe. We could not travel the roadways if it were not for the fine efforts of our town plow trucks and salt spreaders. However, the effects of the salt and chemicals can be damaging to your car.
When possible, have your car washed often and check with the car wash to see if they have an undercarriage wash too. Interestingly, the cars exterior body holds up quite well, it’s the undercarriage, frame, fuel lines, metal gas tank and brake lines that receive the brunt of the damage. All of which, you cannot see unless your car is placed on a lift and inspected by a trained professional.
If you are driving a newer car, there are ways to protect the undercarriage through rust proofing compounds. Every car should be inspected at the end of each winter and checked for winter-related and salt damage.
