When Celebs Do Good: Lessons from My Tween

Last week, while having breakfast, I asked my 12-year-old son to tell me everything he knew about Giannis Antetokounmpo. To my surprise, my phone began to ping nonstop with rapid-fire texts. With a mouthful of scrambled eggs, he corrected my pronunciation and said that Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the most famous basketball players ever. Intrigued, I discovered that “Team Giannis” had chosen Raise the Future as its 2023 nonprofit beneficiary in the NBA All-Star Game.

This selection means that Raise the Future will receive national exposure and a transformational six-figure donation. Moreover, over 100 of our youth and families will have the opportunity to attend the game. The NBA’s tradition of supporting local nonprofits is commendable, and Raise the Future is proud to join the ranks of past recipients such as The United Negro College Fund, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Right Moves for Youth.

As a parent, it was a special moment for me to share this news with my son. He is passionate about basketball and deeply understands the challenges faced by youth in foster care as he himself was adopted into our family five years ago. He immediately grasped the significance of Team Giannis choosing Raise the Future and exclaimed, “Giannis is gonna help find families for kids that need them?” While not entirely accurate, it was heartwarming to see his enthusiasm and connection to this cause.

Over the next week, my son excitedly shared the news with his basketball team and classmates, breaking his usual reticence about his own experiences. It was clear that this acknowledgment from his idol had a profound impact on him.

On February 19, our family will be cheering for Team Giannis from the comfort of our couch, joining thousands of others across the country. As a Development Director for Raise the Future, I am grateful for the generous gift that will benefit the youth and families we serve. As a mother, I am equally grateful for role models like Giannis Antetokounmpo, who exemplify leadership both on and off the court.

In a heartwarming turn of events, Giannis Antetokounmpo and “Team Giannis” have selected Raise the Future as their nonprofit beneficiary for the 2023 NBA All-Star Game. This choice means that Raise the Future will receive significant funding and exposure, allowing them to continue their crucial work supporting youth in foster care. The news struck a chord with my basketball-loving son, who himself was adopted into our family. Through Giannis’s support, he discovered a powerful role model who understands the challenges of growing up and strives to make a positive impact. This story serves as a reminder of the incredible influence celebrities can have in uplifting and inspiring others.
