Dillon Brooks Lands 4-Year Deal with Rockets in Sign-and-Trade

Dillon Brooks, the former Memphis Grizzlies player, has found a new home with the Houston Rockets. He recently signed a four-year, $80 million deal with the Rockets as part of a sign-and-trade agreement involving multiple teams, including the Atlanta Hawks, LA Clippers, and Oklahoma City Thunder. This move to Houston marks another veteran acquisition for the Rockets, with Fred VanVleet also joining the team in free agency.

In the sign-and-trade deal, the Rockets acquired Brooks, the draft rights to Alpha Kaba (who was selected in the 2017 NBA Draft), and two future second-round picks from the Clippers. The Thunder, on the other hand, received veteran guard Patty Mills and three future second-round picks. The Hawks were able to secure Usman Garuba and TyTy Washington Jr. from the Rockets, along with two future second-round picks and cash considerations. Additionally, the Rockets traded Josh Christopher to the Grizzlies and Kenyon Martin Jr. to the Clippers.

Brooks, originally drafted by the Rockets and later traded to the Grizzlies, has established himself as a key player in Memphis. Standing at 6-foot-7, Brooks is known for his defensive skills and was even named to the All-Defensive second team for the 2022-23 season. He averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game last season.

While Brooks’ talent on the court is undeniable, his aggressive playing style has sometimes gotten him into trouble. He led the NBA in technical fouls this season, receiving two one-game suspensions as a result. Brooks has had confrontations with notable players like LeBron James, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson, often playing the role of an antagonist.

In the playoffs, Brooks was ejected from Game 3 of the first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers after striking James in the groin. He claimed that the flagrant foul 2 he received was unintentional and attributed his ejection to his media portrayal and public perception.

Despite his occasional controversies, Brooks brings valuable experience and leadership to the Rockets, who have a promising group of young talent. With players like Amen Thompson, Cam Whitmore, Jabari Smith, Jalen Green, Kevin Porter Jr., and Alperen Sengun, the team will benefit from Brooks’ veteran presence.
