NBA In-Season Tournament to Debut in 2023-24 Season

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is set to introduce an exciting new addition to its annual calendar – the NBA In-Season Tournament. Designed to enhance and innovate around the season structure, this tournament will involve all 30 NBA teams and will commence during the 2023-24 regular season.

Introducing the NBA In-Season Tournament

The inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament will kick off on November 3, 2023, in NBA team markets. The tournament will culminate with the Semifinals on December 7 and the Championship on December 9 at the prestigious T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This thrilling competition aims to provide players and teams with another opportunity to showcase their skills, engage fans in a unique way, and generate increased interest in the early part of the regular season.

Tournament Format

The NBA In-Season Tournament will consist of two stages: Group Play and the Knockout Rounds.

Group Play

During the Group Play stage, all 30 teams will be randomly drawn into groups of five within their conference. These groups will be based on their win-loss records from the previous regular season. Each team will play four designated Group Play games, with two games at home and two on the road. These games, known as “Tournament Nights,” will take place every Tuesday and Friday from November 3 to November 28, excluding Election Day on November 7.

Knockout Rounds

Following the Group Play stage, eight teams will advance to the Knockout Rounds. This selection will include the team with the best standing from each of the six groups, as well as two “wild cards” – the team from each conference with the best record in Group Play games that finished second in its group. The Knockout Rounds will feature single-elimination games, starting with the Quarterfinals on December 4 and December 5 in NBA team markets. The Semifinals and Championship will then take place in Las Vegas on December 7 and December 9, respectively.

Prize Pool and League Honors

Teams participating in the Knockout Rounds of the In-Season Tournament will compete for a prize pool, with the winners of the Championship receiving $500,000 each. Further prize money will be awarded to players on the losing teams in the Championship, Semifinals, and Quarterfinals. Additionally, the NBA will honor the Most Valuable Player of the In-Season Tournament and select an All-Tournament Team based on players’ performances in both Group Play and the Knockout Rounds.

Summary

The NBA In-Season Tournament is set to revolutionize the way fans engage with the sport and provide players and teams with an additional competition to showcase their skills. With the Group Play and Knockout Rounds stages, this tournament promises intense action and thrilling matchups.
