Does the Karl-Anthony Towns & Rudy Gobert tandem work? Wolves will find out soon

The NBA season is just around the corner, and fans are eagerly anticipating the return of basketball on October 24th. As we approach the 2023-24 NBA season, there are many storylines to look out for. One particular storyline worth keeping an eye on is the partnership between Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert for the Timberwolves.

The Timberwolves will have a good sense of whether the Towns-Gobert experiment is successful or not by midseason. In a league that values instant results, patience is often in short supply. The ever-changing landscape of the NBA makes it difficult for teams to stand still and reflect on past decisions. Instead, the focus is on continuous improvement and progress.

Last season, the Wolves were only able to evaluate the Towns-Gobert pairing for a half-season due to Towns’ injury. In the 32 games they played together, the team achieved a .500 record. However, the playoffs did not yield the results they had hoped for, with a disappointing five-game elimination against the Denver Nuggets.

While Gobert performed consistently, Towns had to make adjustments to his game. He took fewer shots near the basket and relied more on his three-point shooting. Additionally, his shooting percentage from beyond the arc dropped to its lowest since his rookie year. There are also questions about his ability to defend effectively on the perimeter, especially after his injury and as he enters his late twenties.

With rumors circulating about Towns potentially being traded, it is clear that the Timberwolves cannot afford to be complacent. The upcoming trade deadline may force them to make a decision on the Towns-Gobert partnership.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the Timberwolves, waiting to see if the Towns-Gobert tandem can deliver the desired results. Only time will tell if this experiment will pay off for Minnesota.
